Load was growing faster than the substation could carry it, and the units in service were decades past their design life. With a regulatory deadline approaching and new builds quoting nearly a year out, the co-op needed a partner who could move on their timeline.

The Challenge

Aging iron, growing load, and a regulatory clock

The cooperative’s substation transformers were over thirty years old and showing it — insulation degradation, rising dissolved-gas readings, and capacity that could no longer keep up with new load on the feeders. The state commission had set a window to bring the substation back into spec, and missing it carried penalties.

The catch: the units had to match the existing 138 kV infrastructure — the same impedance, tap arrangement, and bushing configuration — so the co-op’s crews could swap them in without redesigning the bay. The OEMs they’d traditionally used were quoting 44 to 52 weeks, well past the deadline.

The Solution

Spec-matched units from stock, configured to fit

JCL worked directly with the co-op’s engineering team to map their existing nameplate data, then identified three 30 MVA units that fit the electrical spec. For the tap and bushing details that didn’t match out of the box, our reconditioning facility modified the configurations before shipment — eliminating field rework during the outage window.

We sequenced delivery to the co-op’s crew availability, prioritizing the most critical position first, and shipped every unit with complete factory test reports, nameplate verification, and the compliance documentation the commission required.
